On the Water
Canoe & Canal Rides
The narrow waterways branch endlessly from the main canal — some wide enough only for a single canoe. Sunrise is the best hour: the light comes sideways across the paddy, the herons stand unmoving on the banks, and you can hear everything.
Country boats are also available for longer stretches — visit the open lake, the fishing villages, or simply drift.
At the Table
Home-Style Kerala Meals
Breakfast by the water is included for all guests — puttu and kadala, appam and stew, or a rice-and-curry morning depending on the day. Fish curry, karimeen, avial, and thoran come from the local catch and the kitchen garden.
Sadya — the full Kerala feast served on banana leaf — can be arranged for groups with advance notice.
Into the Village
Village Walks & Cycling
Chathurthyakary unfolds best slowly — on foot at dusk, or on a cycle before the heat comes. Paddy fields that sit below sea level, small shrines at the crossroads, children returning from school on bicycles. Nothing is staged.
Cycles are available at the homestay. Walks can be guided or self-directed.
At Dawn
Birdwatching on the Canal
The canal is a flyway. Kingfishers, purple herons, oriental darters, cormorants, egrets — the list grows before breakfast. The best spots are the bamboo-shaded bends and the open paddy edges at first light.
Binoculars are available to borrow. The homestay team can suggest the morning routes.
Evening Ritual
Sunset & Fishing
The canal turns amber at dusk. Pull up a chair on the sit-out, or walk to the bank and join the fishermen — they've been there every evening for decades. No itinerary required, no extra charge. The sky does the rest.
